Welcome to the fifth roundup of advent calendars for designers and developers. Another year is almost over, and we are ready for another set of high-quality content. Entries are listed (once more) in alphabetic order. I might add more entries as soon as I learn about them.
12daysofweb.dev
Stephanie Eckles (@5t3ph) is a regular of this roundup. This year marks the fourth edition of her advent calendar. As usual, the entries will come live starting December 13th.
24 Days in Umbraco
The Umbraco CMS has been running its advent calendar since 2012. Their CMS might not be the most popular, but their commitment and dedication to their community are awesome.
24 jours de web [French]
24 jours de web is an advent calendar for "people who build the web of the future." These people also need to speak French. Or know how to use a translation service.
Advent of Code
Ask any developers to name an advent calendar, and there is a high chance they'll mention Advent of Code. The most popular season challenge is back for another round. As usual, you can use any programming language to solve the challenges.
Advent of CSS
Advent of CSS is back this year, too, with an awesome look that reminds me of a Christmas postcard from the 1950s or the artwork from the Fallout franchise. "I don't want to set the world on fire..."
Advent of Cyber
Advent of Cyber is a festive introduction to the world of cyber security. This year, you can help McSkidy and the Glitch to foil the plans of the notorious Mayor Malware. All this has over $ 100,000 worth of prizes up for grabs.
Advent of JavaScript
Advent of JavaScript is the sister event to Advent of CSS. It has the same author, the same kind of challenges, and the same style of artwork. Just substitute JavaScript for the main role.
Advent of TypeScript
Advent of TypeScript is new to the roundup, although I missed them last year. This edition runs on a new platform and has nice features like a leaderboard and the promise of some nice prizes.
AdventJS
AdventJS invites you to have fun with new Javascript and Typescript challenges every day until Christmas. Just as last year, the challenges are available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. You can follow the challenges on YouTube and Twitch.
Bekk Christmas
Bekk Christmas is another veteran of dev advent calendars. Each day, you will receive a package of articles, each focused on one programming language. Only a handful of them, though, are in English. Most are in Norwegian, but that is hardly an obstacle in this age.
C# Advent Calendar
C# Advent continues the trend set last year. This means two articles every day—one day more than the other calendars, as it includes December 25th as well.
F# Advent Calendar in English
Last year, the F# community made an extended advent calendar that lasted 32 days. This year, they are back to the traditional 24 slots.
Festive Tech Calendar
The Festive Tech Calendar community is back with multiple daily videos. This year, they are raising funds for the Beatson Cancer Charity in Glasgow, Scotland.
HTMHell Advent Calendar
HTMLHell has proven to be a highly quality contributor to the industry. I have high hopes for this year as well.
IndieWeb Gift Calendar
The 2024 IndieWeb Gift Calendar is the 8th annual group effort to gift one or more IndieWeb-related thing(s) each day of December that others can use to improve their IndieWeb experience.
Java Advent
The JVM advent plans to make the festive season even sweeter for all Java enthusiasts. Each day, you can access one new article on various JVM-related topics.
JavaScriptmas 2024
JavaScriptmas 2024 is Scrimba's set of advent code challenges. The prizes for this edition include cool merch, lifetime subscriptions, and a 13" MacBook Air M3.
Knowit Kodekalender [Norwegian]
Knowit brings fresh coding challenges that you can solve until right after Christmas. Just make sure you know Norwegian or that you trust your translation service.
Perl Advent Calendar
The 2024 edition of the Perl Advent Calendar looks just about the same as last year. It also has the same quality content for all Perl developers.
Perl & Raku 2024 Advent Calendar
The Perl & Raku 2024 Advent Calendar features 24 of last year's weekly challenges, along with the solutions their authors submitted.
Qiita Advent Calendars [Japanese]
Qiita proves that the passion for web technologies is not reserved only for the Western world; it's "Big in Japan" as well.
Raku Advent Calendar
Raku (Perl 6) developers can enjoy one more year of their favorite advent calendar.
SELFHTML Advent Calendar
Forums and wikis are less popular now in today's web. However, SELFHTML remains a popular destination for German-speaking web developers. Same for their 2024 Advent Calendar
Web Performance Calendar
The Web Performance Calendar is another veteran, having been running since 2009. Speed geeks can rest assured that they can sate their thirst for knowledge this year as well.
Acknowledgements
I got inspired to make my own advent calendar listing by the Smashing Magazine Advent Calendar Roundups. I also want to give a big shoutout to Adrian Roselli who's been tracking advent calendars since 2010.
If you enjoyed this content, I invite you to check the roundups I did in previous years - some calendars are not running anymore, but their content is still top quality even today.
Wrapping things up
Ukraine is still suffering from the Russian invasion - if you are looking for ways to help, please check Smashing Magazine's article We All Are Ukraine 🇺🇦 or get in touch with your trusted charity.
If you enjoyed this roundup, there are a couple of ways to support it:
Each one of these helps me out, and I would appreciate your consideration.
That's all there is for this year. Have a great and productive winter holiday season, keep yourselves safe, and I will see you around!
Happy Coding Advent!
